    GodView

In 1|99 we have been spending the last couple of weeks thinking about the way we view God. We spent the first week discussing how our perceptions can effect our responses. This is also true with our view of God. Our view of God affects how we look at life and how we treat people. This week we have explored the size of our GodView. We posed the question, is our GodView too small? When our view of God is too small and the storms come, then our view gets shattered and causes many to abandon their faith. A storm has hit our community the last couple days as two of our teachers at Whitewater High School got into a lot of trouble and have had to resign their positions. How should our view of God impact our response to this situation that currently surrounds us? We would love to hear what you think.

    • Well first of all I find it interesting that all of this news hits the fan on September 11th. This is already a day where we remember tragedy and try to deal with it. Now with the current issue of these two Whitewater teachers it seems to perpetuate the pain in a local way. I wonder what the Godview is like of these teachers. Is their view of God one that does not care about them and what they do? Too lenient? Too distant? I don’t know. But I am forced to use the view of God I obtain to try to make some sense of it all. I know God loves them. I know God made them in His image the same as you or me; I even think God has forgiven them. But I think He also mourns over situations like this. I just picture Him saying “Guys, why? You just don’t get it, do you?” Even the most loving Father who has promised to never leave us in times of trouble and IS love still gets upset and disappointed I think. The kind of disappointment that comes from wanting your children to flourish but they instead flounder. It’s all pretty surreal. I know that much.

    • In my personal God view I have to think that with the incomprehensible being of God we can’t understand why things happen. As soon as we try to we’ve put Him in a box. In this current situation in our community I see two human beings who made a mistake, as we all do. But with mistakes comes consequences, but we often only realize the consequences that affect us. When in reality hundreds of people are impacted by the choices they made. There is going to pain. There is going to be confusion. There is going to be anger. But it will pass. New people will come to shape our community. Thats really the message of the Bible. Renewal.

I think we all need to quit judging, if for no other reason than for the families involved. Both have young children. As stated above, everyone messes up at some point, more than likely a lot of times. Some people say teachers have to live above the expectaions set for other professional. I do not understand that statement at all. Being a former teacher myself, I can assure you that all teachers are human and make mistakes. It is a very heavy burden that teachers carry knowing their every move is being watched. Am I saying that these two shouldn’t have gotten in trouble or been arrested? No, I’m not. But really, how many people are arrested for the very same offense on a daily basis? Do we hear every dirty detail about them? They screwed up and did it very bad. I have had one child go through the band program and it was no secret what I thought of some of the methods that were used. But just take a look at the outcomes: several grand champion awards, kids at allstate, etc. – usually very good performances. Yes, I know they work with teenagers and have a lot of impact on them; and yes, I agree they should probably not be around the kids at WHS right now. But that has been taken care of by others, we don’t need to contribute anything to further this cause. So, let’s move on with our lives, as they have to do, too. Hopefully we’ve learned a lesson – NOBODY is perfect or beyond reprimand. Please keep all involved in your prayers, including the students and the rest of the staff. It’s not easy for anybody. We will all get through. And one more thing – GOOOO Wildcats!

My thoughts on this situation is that you don’t know everything about people’s private lives. I thought I knew a lot about them, but I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I also agree that it will do nobody any good to gossip or make rumors about the situation. The best thing to do is to pray for them and their families.
